Skinny Fat: Obese on the Inside?
Just because you appear to have a normal Body Mass Index doesn’t mean you’re healthy; it could in actual fact mean you’re obese! A new study published in the European Heart Journal defines a new term ‘normal weight obesity’ – an individual who has a normal BMI but has a high ratio of body fat, which could lead to obesity-related diseases like heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes. The study examined 6 171 individuals who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. All participants were older than 20 years of age, had a BMI within normal range and underwent various assessments of their body composition, blood and heart.
